Merging Duplicate Business Profiles on Google – How to Combine Listings into One?d-tags
A well-optimized Google Business Profile is the foundation of visibility for any local business. Consistent contact information, correct location, opening hours, and reliable customer reviews—all of these directly influence a user’s purchasing decision and help them easily find your business. Problems arise when multiple listings for the same business appear on Google Maps, containing conflicting or outdated information. Such duplicates create confusion, reduce trust, and can even lead to losing potential customers to competitors. How can you merge duplicate listings into one? Here’s the essential information.

Where Do  Duplicate Google Business Profiles Come From?

Duplicate Business Profiles can appear completely by accident—for example, through Google’s automatic processes—or due to lack of awareness about an existing profile. It’s important to know that each unnecessary listing carries the risk of dispersing reviews, decreasing visibility on Google Maps, and most importantly—losing potential customers.

The most common reasons for duplicates are:

  • Automatic profile creation by Google – Google’s algorithms can automatically create a business listing based on publicly available information online. If the owner is unaware that such a profile already exists (because they didn’t create one themselves) and creates another, a duplicate is formed.
  • Business location change – Moving a business to a new location should involve updating the existing profile. Sometimes, however, a new listing is created while the old one remains active with outdated address and information.
  • Rebranding and name change – Companies undergoing rebranding often create a new profile under the new name, without updating the old one. This results in two parallel listings for the same address on Google Maps.
  • Profile created by others – Occasionally, an employee or even a customer creates a listing “to help” the business online, which also results in a duplicate.

Regardless of the scenario, the outcome is always similar—customers encounter conflicting information, lose trust, and Google ranks your business data as less consistent. That’s why it’s crucial to regularly monitor your profile and quickly address duplicates so that only one current business listing exists online.

Can a Business Have More Than One Google Listing?

For businesses operating at a single address, the rule is simple—there should only be one Google Maps listing. Duplicates at the same location do more harm than good because they mislead customers.

However, the situation is different when a business has multiple branches, offices, or service points in different locations. In such cases, it’s advisable—and necessary—to create a separate Google Business Profile for each location, with unique contact information, opening hours, and details specific to that location. This approach increases your chances of appearing in “near me” searches and helps customers quickly find the specific branch they need.

How to Check if Your Business Has Duplicates?

Verifying whether your business has duplicate Google listings is the first step in organizing your visibility. The easiest way is to enter your business’s full name, contact details, or address in Google and check the results in Google Maps and search results. It’s also useful to try variations, such as abbreviations or previous names, since duplicates often appear in these cases. If you find such profiles, the next step is the merging process.

How to Merge Google Listings into One?

Merging duplicate listings on Google is an important step if you want to avoid confusion and improve your business visibility on Maps. While it may seem challenging, the process is not complicated. It requires several steps:

1. Check access to profiles

Log in to your Google account and make sure you have access to all listings you want to merge. If not, request access or claim the profile. More information can be found here: Google My Business Ownership – Who Has It and How to Claim Rights?

2. Verify that profiles contain the same information

Merging is only possible if the profiles refer to the same business and location. Check that the address, phone number, and name match.

3. Report the duplicate on Google Maps

Go to the profile you want to remove and click “Suggest an edit.” Then select “Place is permanently closed or doesn’t exist” and mark the reason: “Duplicate of another place.”

4. Wait for verification

Google reviews each duplicate listing report. Only if it is deemed valid will the duplicate profiles be merged. If successful, reviews are transferred and consolidated. Note, however, that responses to reviews are not always transferred to the new listing.

5. Update the main profile

After merging, check that the information is correct and reviews are visible. This is a good time to add photos, current hours, and other details consistent with your website.

Summary

A duplicate business profile doesn’t have to be a problem. If you have access to both listings, you can easily merge them into one while keeping all existing reviews. Merging duplicates helps organize your profile, increases consistency of information on Google, and improves your visibility in local search results, allowing customers to quickly find accurate and up-to-date information about your business.
