What is citability and why does AI need a reason to mention your brand at all?
Citability is the brand’s ability to be cited by AI models and by Google’s algorithms inside AI Overviews. It is one of the core pillars of AISO (AI Search Optimization) — without citability, there is no AI Visibility.
Generative models reference brands only when several conditions are met:
- they have high-quality, trustworthy sources,
- they understand the brand’s entity,
- they find specific data, conclusions and expert insights,
- they see the brand mentioned in authoritative external publications,
- they can clearly associate the brand with a defined category or expertise area.
What influences citability?
- expert publications and thought-leadership content,
- case studies grounded in real data,
- reports, benchmarks and statistical insights,
- AI-ready content formats: tables, comparisons, definitions, lists, models,
- links and brand mentions on reputable external domains,
- structured content that allows AI to extract information easily.
What questions does citability answer?
- Does AI have a strong enough reason to recommend my brand?
- Are my content assets specific and data-driven enough for a model to reuse them?
- Does AI perceive my brand as an expert in the category?
