What Is a Keyword Gap?
A keyword gap is the difference between the search queries a website ranks for and the queries its competitors rank for. Keyword gap analysis identifies terms for which competing websites have search visibility while the analyzed website either does not rank or ranks significantly lower.
A keyword gap can reveal untapped opportunities for organic visibility, but a competitor ranking for a keyword does not automatically mean that your website should target it.
How Does Keyword Gap Analysis Work?
Keyword gap analysis compares your website’s keyword profile with those of selected competitors.
It can reveal:
- keywords your competitors rank for but you don’t,
- queries where your site ranks below competing websites,
- topic areas that are poorly represented within your current site structure,
- opportunities to improve existing content,
- subjects that may require new pages.
The analysis can be performed at domain level or narrowed down to a specific subfolder, section, or individual URL.
Keyword Gap Example
Imagine three ecommerce stores selling coffee machines.
Two competitors rank for searches such as:
- best coffee machine for home,
- automatic vs manual coffee machine,
- coffee machine with grinder,
- how to choose a coffee machine,
- best coffee machine for a small kitchen.
If the third store has no visibility for these queries, they represent a potential keyword gap.
That does not mean each keyword requires a new blog post. The next step is to understand search intent, review existing pages, and decide whether the query should be addressed by a guide, category page, product page, comparison, or an expanded existing resource.
Keyword Gap vs. Content Gap
A keyword gap focuses primarily on differences in visibility for specific search queries. A content gap is broader and refers to topics, information, or user needs that a website does not cover or covers insufficiently.
A single content gap can therefore contain many related keyword gaps.
For example, keyword gap analysis may uncover dozens of searches related to choosing a coffee machine. Further analysis may show that these queries represent one missing topic that can be addressed by a comprehensive resource or a cluster of connected pages.
Keyword gap analysis can therefore be part of a broader content gap analysis, but the two terms are not interchangeable.
How Do You Find Keyword Gaps?
Keyword gaps are commonly identified by comparing your search visibility with several competing domains using SEO tools.
The analysis should consider:
- keywords competitors rank for but your site does not,
- queries where competitors outrank your pages,
- search intent,
- the types of pages appearing in the SERPs,
- business value,
- content already available on your website,
- whether an existing page can be improved instead of creating a new one.
Tools such as Semrush, Ahrefs, and Google Search Console can provide useful data for this process.
Should You Target Every Keyword Gap?
No. A keyword gap represents an opportunity to investigate, not an automatic recommendation.
A competitor may rank for a keyword that is irrelevant to your products, target audience, or business model.
Keyword opportunities should therefore be evaluated based on factors such as:
- relevance to the offer,
- search intent,
- stage of the customer journey,
- potential traffic and conversions,
- competition,
- existing site architecture,
- resources required to create or improve the relevant content.
Only then can you decide which gaps are actually worth closing.
Keyword Gaps and Topic Clusters
Missing keywords should not always be analyzed individually.
When several queries relate to the same broader subject, they can be grouped to determine whether the website adequately covers that topic.
Keyword gap analysis can therefore help identify new topic clusters or missing pages within existing clusters.
This makes it possible to build a coherent content structure instead of creating a separate page for every keyword variation.
Keyword Gap and AI Search
Traditional keyword gap analysis primarily focuses on search queries and search engine visibility. It is not the same as an AI visibility gap.
In ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and other generative systems, users can ask longer and more complex questions, while answers may be built using multiple related searches and sources.
For this reason, competitive analysis in 2026 and 2027 can also examine:
- prompts and questions where competing brands appear,
- contexts in which competitors are mentioned,
- sources used to support AI generated answers,
- topics where your own brand remains absent.
This is an additional layer of visibility analysis rather than a replacement for traditional keyword gap analysis.
How Does Delante Approach Keyword Gap Analysis?
At Delante, we don’t treat a keyword gap report as a list of competitor keywords that should automatically be added to a content plan.
We first determine why a competitor ranks for a query, what the user’s intent is, and whether visibility for that search can create meaningful business value for the client.
We then decide whether closing the gap requires:
- creating a new page,
- expanding existing content,
- changing a page’s scope or intent,
- improving internal linking,
- developing a broader topic cluster,
- or taking no action at all.
The goal is not to rank for more keywords than a competitor. The goal is to identify valuable areas of search demand that the website currently fails to capture and that can contribute to traffic, conversions, and business growth.
At Delante, we use keyword and content gap analysis both when building new SEO strategies and when developing existing websites. We also distinguish between business competitors and organic search competitors, because the sites competing for the same SERP visibility are not always companies selling the same products or services.
