What Is an Entity Gap?
An Entity Gap is the difference between the categories, needs, use cases, or areas of expertise AI systems associate with your brand and those they associate with your competitors. It shows not only whether a brand appears in AI-generated answers, but also the context in which it is recognized and the user needs for which it is considered relevant.
An Entity Gap can exist even when an AI system clearly recognizes a brand, but associates it with a narrower range of topics or use cases than competing brands.
Entity Gap Example
Imagine three SEO agencies.
AI-generated answers regularly describe:
- Company A as an ecommerce SEO specialist,
- Company B as an international SEO expert,
- Company C as a general SEO agency.
When a user asks:
“Which SEO agency has experience with international ecommerce?”
Companies A and B may be considered more relevant.
Company C may have strong overall AI visibility while still having an Entity Gap in international ecommerce SEO.
Entity Gap vs. Prompt Gap
Prompt Gap identifies the questions where competitors appear in AI responses while your brand does not. Entity Gap helps determine whether one reason for this difference is a weaker association between your brand and a particular category, need, or use case.
Prompt Gap shows where visibility is being lost.
Entity Gap helps explain which associations are weaker.
Entity Gap vs. Topic Gap
Topic Gap and Entity Gap describe different problems.
A Topic Gap means a website lacks sufficient coverage of a subject. An Entity Gap means AI systems associate a competing brand with that subject more strongly than they associate your brand with it.
A company may already publish substantial content on a topic while still having an Entity Gap.
For example, it may have several ecommerce SEO articles but lack case studies, external publications, recognizable experts, or consistent third-party references connecting the brand with ecommerce SEO.
Entity Gap vs. Narrative Gap
The concepts are related but not identical.
Entity Gap focuses on what a brand is associated with. Narrative Gap focuses on how the brand is described.
For example:
Entity Gap:
“Competitor = ecommerce SEO, our brand = general SEO.”
Narrative Gap:
“Competitor = innovative specialist, our brand = traditional provider.”
Both gaps can occur at the same time.
What Can AI Associate a Brand With?
Entity associations can involve:
- product or service categories,
- specializations,
- industries,
- customer types,
- markets and locations,
- use cases,
- customer problems,
- technologies,
- price segments,
- target audiences,
- experts,
- product or service attributes.
This is why simply asking whether an AI system “knows the brand” provides limited insight.
A more useful question is:
“For which user needs does AI consider this brand relevant?”
How Do You Identify an Entity Gap?
Entity Gap analysis should be comparative.
Review:
- how AI describes your brand,
- how it describes key competitors,
- which specializations it assigns to each one,
- which needs and use cases it connects to each brand,
- which prompt clusters consistently trigger your brand,
- where competitors appear significantly more often.
The most important gaps are those connected to commercially important areas.
What Can Cause an Entity Gap?
There is no single factor that determines how AI systems associate a brand with a topic.
The digital picture of a brand can be shaped by information across:
- owned websites,
- case studies,
- service and product pages,
- industry publications,
- rankings and comparison pages,
- customer reviews,
- expert content,
- social platforms,
- partner websites,
- external databases and platforms.
Consistency also matters.
If a company claims expertise in one area on its website but is rarely associated with that area elsewhere, the connection may be weaker than for a competitor whose specialization is repeatedly reinforced across multiple sources.
How Can You Reduce an Entity Gap?
The right action depends on the association the brand wants to strengthen.
It may include:
- developing the relevant topic cluster,
- publishing case studies,
- improving service pages,
- producing original research or data,
- increasing expert visibility,
- digital PR,
- earning relevant third-party mentions,
- creating more consistent positioning around the target area.
The objective is not simply to repeat a keyword.
The brand should provide a consistent body of information and evidence supporting the desired association.
Does Schema Help With Entity Gap?
Structured data can make information about an organization, person, product, or other entity more explicit, but schema alone does not create expertise or a strong association with a category.
Closing an Entity Gap therefore requires more than technical markup.
Structured data can support clarity, while content, evidence, expert presence, and third-party sources reinforce the broader association.
Entity Gap in AI Search
Traditional SEO often focuses primarily on whether a page ranks for a query.
AI Search adds another dimension:
the context in which a brand appears in the generated answer.
Two brands may have similar Mention Share while being associated with very different needs.
One may appear mainly in broad category prompts, while the other consistently appears when users ask for a specific specialization or recommendation.
Entity Gap analysis therefore answers:
“Does AI associate our brand with the areas we want to own?”
How Does Delante Approach Entity Gap Analysis?
At Delante, we treat Entity Gap as one component of competitive AI Search benchmarking.
We don’t stop at identifying that a competitor appears more frequently.
We analyze which needs, categories, and use cases AI associates with competitors more strongly than with our client’s brand.
A brand may have strong overall AI visibility while still losing in its most commercially important category because a competitor is more strongly associated with that specialization.
Based on this analysis, we can identify where the brand needs stronger:
- content,
- case studies,
- data and evidence,
- experts,
- digital PR,
- AI Authority Link Building,
- third-party mentions.
Entity Gap is therefore not simply about the number of brand mentions.
It helps show the semantic position a brand occupies in its category and where competitors have stronger associations.
