AI vs. Google: Key Differences

In the introduction, we mentioned that AI will not replace Google Search, but we still have to prove it. What’s the best way to do that? Looking into the differences between both solutions and how they can impact how users browse the web.

The Current State of Google Search

First, let’s take a look at our favorite Google and its current condition.

Google is more than just search; it’s Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Google Meet, and so on. All of these services are integrated together, and the search engine is just one of the tools. What’s more, Google is a giant in online advertising, and the data collected via the searches is invaluable: both for marketers who want to target specific consumers and for consumers who want to have personalized content tailored to their problems and needs.

At the same time, Google lets you check as many sites as you wish and reacts to semantic searches. It has relatively up-to-date information (depending on the indexing of particular pages) – the limit is your time and effort.

The Current State of AI

AI, on the other hand, is a separate tool – you can use ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity, but they provide you only with a generative artificial intelligence engine. What’s more, AI in most cases won’t display its search results with links to the sources. As such, it won’t be able to meet some user expectations – its success or failure depends on the search intent.

For example, AI will be great if you need a guide – you can ask it to collect info from multiple sources and prepare a detailed explanation of the phenomena you’re searching for. But if it’s insufficient, you won’t have the sources to look into for further reference. To add to that:

  • AI hallucinates – generates erroneous results due to its statistical approach, mistakes in source data, and failures in combining data,
  • AI doesn’t work on an up-to-date database – it uses information collected in the past, so its knowledge updates less frequently than the Google search engine results pages,
  • AI won’t provide you with sufficient help for all searches – it might fail to present sufficient results to make a good decision.

For instance, let’s look at the problem of online shopping with AI. If you ask ChatGPT about the best place to buy Head & Shoulders shampoo, here’s what you’ll get:

It can give you pretty decent results: you’ve got three sources to check. Nevertheless, you know that:

  • you cannot trust these prices – even ChatGPT points that out,
  • you don’t know whether other shops offer the same shampoo,
  • you don’t know whether these shops have the lowest prices.

In comparison, if you look into Google, you’ll get an extensive list of products, available at different stores:

This makes it much easier to compare the prices and select the product you want to buy.

So, Why Won’t AI Replace Google Search?

Knowing the main differences, let’s delve a bit further into the topic: why exactly won’t AI replace the Google search engine anytime soon? Here are the main reasons:

Google Search EngineArtificial Intelligence
AccuracyGoogle will provide you with more precise results, showing a larger number of websites (sources) – as was the case with the shampoo; this makes it easier to find the perfect answer to your query.AI can provide you with more-or-less accurate answers, but they are rather descriptive and frequently don’t exhaust the topic, as was the case with the shampoo.
UpdatesGoogle is only limited by indexing time; this way, it updates its databases much more frequently.Artificial intelligence needs to be fed with that data regularly. This means that at certain time intervals, it may lack up-to-date information.
Search TypesIn Google, you can search using text… but also images and sounds. In AI, you might use voice search, but so far, you cannot search using images.
Query HandlingGoogle handles simple queries based on the keywords entered – you cannot ask it to complete a specific task.AI can perform more complex tasks, like analyzing and summarizing information for you.

To add to that, we must mention that Google is already using AI – it’s woven into the search engine.

Currently, US users can see AI Overviews (previously called Search Generative Experience) – search results generated by artificial intelligence. They don’t pop up in all searches (and are far from being perfect), but this shows how Google and AI can actually coexist and support each other. We also mustn’t forget Google Assistant, which is also an AI tool. It can even control your home appliances if you plug them into Google Home, not to mention carry out more complex, search-related tasks such as:

  • telling jokes on demand,
  • presenting weather forecast,
  • operating your music streaming app,
  • and more.

Knowing Google, it will continue to develop AI-powered features instead of throwing in the towel. The giant won’t let the users flow away from its search engine easily. This means that even though we still need some time for artificial intelligence to equal Google in searching the web, Google will also get better, using the advantage it already has in this race.

The Takeaway

Will AI replace Google? If it will, it won’t happen soon. Currently, Google has an edge over AI, mainly due to its more thorough approach, providing more links and the AI hallucinating. Since Google does not stop developing its own AI-powered features, it will undoubtedly take a lot of time for other artificial intelligence engines to catch up with it, so we shouldn’t be worried about ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and similar tools in the near future.

At the same time, we should start thinking about optimizing websites for AI. Do you need help with that? Discover our international SEO services and let the experts handle this task for you!
