Google is testing AI-generated search result descriptions

Google has started testing a new feature in which page meta descriptions and search result snippets are automatically generated by artificial intelligence. The goal of the experiment is to determine whether AI-generated content can better match user intent and improve the overall quality of search results.

The tests include two variants of how AI operates in Google search results:

  1. Complete replacement of the traditional meta description with AI-generated content.
  2. Adding a short AI-generated summary to the search result snippet.

Screenshots shared online (including by Paul Shapiro and Brodie Clark) show examples of descriptions accompanied by the Gemini icon – indicating that the snippet was prepared by Google’s AI system. Notably, this feature is not limited to specific domains such as Reddit – the tests cover various types of websites.

This change may significantly affect the CTR (click-through rate) in search results. Until now, Google has often modified the meta descriptions provided by website owners, adapting them to match the user’s query. Now, however, it may completely replace those fragments with its own AI-generated descriptions or summaries.

Microsoft refreshes Bing Places for Business

Microsoft has announced the release of a completely new version of Bing Places for Business, its equivalent of Google Business Profile. The new version aims to simplify business visibility management in Bing search results and ensure better integration with the Microsoft ecosystem – including Bing Maps, Copilot, and AI-powered systems.

The updated service introduces:

  • a new, modern user interface,
  • a domain change from www.bingplaces.com to www.bing.com/forbusiness,
  • a faster and more reliable data import process,
  • a new recommendation tool that automatically suggests optimization actions.

This recommendation tool analyzes a business profile and suggests specific improvements such as:

  • adding photos that increase user engagement,
  • completing missing contact information, website links, or social profiles,
  • industry-specific tips (e.g., adding a menu or an online order link for restaurants).

All existing users will be automatically migrated to the new interface. Microsoft assures that business accounts and listings will retain their data and remain accessible after logging into the updated system. The company emphasizes that the update “enhances trust and accessibility” and that Bing Places is now more tightly integrated with other Microsoft services.

The Bing Places update means greater opportunities to optimize local business visibility in the Bing ecosystem. It is also significant from an AISO perspective. Business data from this platform is used by Microsoft’s Bing Copilot and other AI systems to generate responses about local services.

This means that an up-to-date, well-optimized Bing Places profile can influence not only traditional search results but also AI-generated answers.

Google tests new “Insights” section in Business Profiles

Since Microsoft is upgrading Bing Places, Google isn’t standing still. Reports have surfaced about a new feature in Google Business Profiles called “Insights”. This section aims to help business owners manage their local visibility more effectively through personalized suggestions and analytical data.

When clicked, the button displays recommendations for optimizing the profile, such as:

  • encouraging customers to leave more reviews,
  • adding updates or posts about news,
  • sharing information that can attract potential customers.

Yoast SEO AI+ – a tool for monitoring brand visibility in AI-generated responses

Yoast SEO is well known to every SEO specialist. Now, it offers an extension designed for the new era of AI-driven search.

Yoast SEO AI+ allows you to check how and where your brand appears in AI-generated answers, such as those from ChatGPT, and how it is perceived in terms of tone, credibility, and cited sources.

The new package combines the classic Yoast SEO Premium and WooCommerce SEO features with the Yoast AI Brand Insights (Beta) module, which analyzes brand visibility within AI environments. Users receive weekly reports with information about:

  • the number of mentions,
  • context of responses (positive/negative tone),
  • citation sources (which sites appear most often in AI results),
  • brand ranking compared to competitors.

The system also calculates the AI Visibility Index – a metric measuring brand visibility in AI results, taking into account the number of mentions, ranking, citations, and emotional tone of the responses.

Preparing for an upcoming “earthquake” in SEO

All the updates discussed – from Google’s AI snippet tests, to Bing Places improvements, to Yoast’s analytical tools – are parts of a larger puzzle. However, the real earthquake is yet to come with the global implementation of AI mode in Google.
