Anthropic introduces a revolutionary change to its flagship language model. Claude is no longer just an advanced conversationalist – it now becomes an active collaborator capable of creating and editing documents in popular office formats. This new feature, described by its creators as “Upgraded file creation and analysis,” is a response to OpenAI’s popular Code Interpreter functionality and significantly expands possibilities for AI interaction.

What’s new in Claude? On-demand file handling

The latest update allows users to directly interact with files within the chat window. Instead of receiving text-only answers, users can now ask Claude to perform specific tasks and receive ready-to-use files in response.

Early testers’ observations indicate that the model handles a wide range of tasks, such as:

  • Creating and editing spreadsheets (e.g., Excel), including working formulas, multi-sheet workbooks, and scenario analyses.
  • Generating presentations (e.g., PowerPoint) based on provided data or documents.
  • Preparing text documents and PDF files with summaries, reports, or formatted notes.

The feature is currently available in an early access version for users on the Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Pro plan users are expected to gain access in the coming weeks.

How does it work? Claude’s private “computer”

To enable such advanced operations, Anthropic has given Claude access to a private, isolated computing environment known as a sandbox. Inside this environment, Claude can write and execute code, mainly in Python and Node.js, to process data, perform calculations, and generate files.

This is a fundamental shift, transforming Claude from an advisor into an executor. The user provides the idea, context, and data, and the model takes care of the technical implementation in the background.

What do we know about Claude’s new working environment?

User analyses reveal that Claude’s environment runs on Ubuntu 24.04 and has access to Python 3.12.3 and Node.js v18.19.1. Most importantly, Claude can install additional Python packages using pip, giving it great flexibility in data analysis – an advantage over competing solutions.

Practical use cases that change the game

The new feature opens the door to automating tasks that until now required specialist knowledge and many hours of work.

From raw data to ready analyses

Users can now upload raw data, for example in a CSV file, and ask Claude to clean, perform statistical analysis, and visualize it. As a result, they receive not only ready PNG charts but also a formatted spreadsheet with a written summary of key findings.

Effortless work across multiple formats

One of the most appreciated capabilities is smooth format transitions. Users report that they can upload a large PDF report and within moments get a professional PowerPoint presentation based on it. Similarly, chaotic meeting notes can be transformed into a structured document, and a collection of invoices into an organized Excel sheet with calculations.

Security and limitations: What to keep in mind?

Anthropic openly states that the new feature, by granting Claude limited internet access (e.g., for downloading packages), involves certain risks. There is a theoretical possibility that malicious instructions hidden in processed files or web pages could be exploited to leak data. Therefore, the company recommends careful monitoring of chats when using this function.

It is also worth noting the current limitations:

  • Maximum file size (both uploaded and generated) is 30 MB. This is considerably less than the OpenAI competitor’s limit of 512 MB.

Claude becomes a true work partner

The new file creation and editing feature is a milestone in the evolution of Anthropic’s models. It narrows the gap between idea and execution, making advanced data analysis and office work automation accessible to everyone through simple conversation. Despite its somewhat awkward name and certain limitations, it is a step toward a future where AI is not only a source of information but a powerful tool for performing concrete tasks.
