Citation Share

What Is Citation Share?

Citation Share measures the percentage of all citations appearing across a monitored set of AI-generated answers that point to your domain. It shows how much of the overall citation space your website captures compared with other sources used by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and other AI systems.

Citation Share is a relative metric. Instead of simply counting citations, it shows your domain’s share of all sources cited within the analyzed category.

How Is Citation Share Calculated?

At Delante, we recommend using the following formula:

Citation Share = citations to your domain / all citations in the analyzed answer set × 100%

For example, if AI systems generate 200 citations across a tracked prompt set and 40 point to your domain:

Citation Share = 40 / 200 × 100% = 20%

Your website therefore accounts for one fifth of all citations observed in the sample.

Why Does Citation Share Need a Consistent Methodology?

Citation Share is meaningful only when measurements use a consistent methodology.

Keep the same:

  • prompt set,
  • AI platform,
  • language,
  • market,
  • number of runs,
  • citation counting method,
  • measurement period.

Changing the prompt set can change the result even if the website’s underlying AI visibility has not changed.

A Citation Share value should therefore always be interpreted in the context of its prompt set, platform, and measurement period.

Citation Share vs. Citation Rate

AI Search terminology is still evolving, and different platforms sometimes use these terms differently.

At Delante, we distinguish them as follows:

Citation Share measures your domain’s share of all citations:

your citations / all citations

Citation Rate measures the percentage of analyzed AI answers that include at least one citation to your domain:

answers citing your domain / all analyzed answers

The metrics answer different questions and should not be used interchangeably.

Citation Share vs. Mention Share

Citation Share measures whether your domain is used as a source. Mention Share measures how often your brand appears in the generated answer.

A brand can be mentioned without its own website being cited.

It is also possible for an article on a company’s website to be cited as a source without the brand itself being explicitly mentioned in the generated answer.

Citation Share and Mention Share should therefore be monitored separately.

Citation Share vs. Recommendation Share

Citation Share tells you whether AI systems use your website as evidence.

Recommendation Share tells you how often they actively recommend the brand.

A website can have a high Citation Share without being frequently recommended, and a brand can be recommended based largely on external sources without its own domain being cited.

Citation Share Example

Imagine you monitor 50 prompts related to CRM selection.

Across the generated answers, you record:

  • 45 citations to competitor A,
  • 30 citations to competitor B,
  • 15 citations to your domain,
  • 60 citations to other sources.

There are 150 citations in total.

Your Citation Share is:

15 / 150 × 100% = 10%

Competitor A has:

45 / 150 × 100% = 30%

The raw number of citations therefore becomes far more meaningful when it is placed in the context of the entire citation landscape.

Should Citation Share Be Combined Across AI Platforms?

It is usually more useful to analyze each platform separately.

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode can use different sources and retrieval mechanisms.

A website may therefore have:

  • 24% Citation Share in ChatGPT,
  • 11% in Gemini,
  • 37% in Perplexity.

An aggregate metric can also be calculated, but platform-level results should remain available for analysis.

Why Does Citation Share Matter?

Citation Share answers an important AI Search question:

“What share of the sources AI systems use in our category comes from our website?”

It helps assess:

  • whether AI systems use your domain as a source,
  • how that compares with competitors,
  • which topics earn citations,
  • where competitors or external publishers dominate the source landscape,
  • whether your share is increasing over time.

Citation Share can therefore be a useful KPI in competitive AI Search benchmarking.

Does High Citation Share Mean High Brand Visibility?

Not necessarily.

Citation Share measures source visibility, not the complete AI visibility picture.

It should be analyzed alongside metrics such as:

  • Mention Share,
  • Recommendation Share,
  • Selection Share,
  • AI Visibility,
  • brand prominence,
  • Prompt Gap,
  • Source Gap.

Together, these metrics help show whether AI systems know the brand, use its content, recommend it, and how its performance compares with competitors.

How Can You Increase Citation Share?

There is no single factor that guarantees citations.

The useful starting point is to identify topics where competitors are consistently used as sources while your domain is not.

Then investigate:

  • whether the topic is adequately covered,
  • whether the page provides specific information,
  • whether it includes original evidence or data,
  • whether information is current,
  • whether the page is accessible to relevant crawlers,
  • whether its structure makes important information easy to retrieve,
  • which types of sources AI systems cite for the topic.

The goal should be to create genuinely useful sources, rather than simply producing more pages.

How Does Delante Approach Citation Share?

At Delante, we use Citation Share as one of the core KPIs in competitive AI Search benchmarking.

We don’t evaluate raw citation counts in isolation because the same number can represent very different performance depending on the category.

Instead, we ask:

What share of the entire citation landscape does the client’s domain capture, and how does that compare with competitors?

We analyze Citation Share:

  • across a fixed prompt set,
  • separately for each AI platform,
  • by relevant topics and intents,
  • over time,
  • against competitors.

We then analyze which URLs earn citations and which competing or third-party sources are cited instead.

This turns Citation Share from a reporting metric into a diagnostic tool for identifying where competitors have stronger source visibility.

FAQ

What does Citation Share mean?

Citation Share measures the percentage of all citations observed across a monitored set of AI answers that point to your domain.

How do you calculate Citation Share?

Divide the number of citations to your domain by the total number of citations within the same analyzed answer set and multiply by 100%.

What is the difference between Citation Share and Mention Share?

Citation Share measures whether your website is used as a source. Mention Share measures whether the brand name appears in the AI-generated response.

What is the difference between Citation Share and Citation Rate?

At Delante, Citation Share means your domain's share of all citations. Citation Rate means the percentage of analyzed answers in which your domain is cited.

Should Citation Share be compared across ChatGPT and Gemini?

It should primarily be measured separately for each platform because different AI systems may use different sources. An aggregate result can be useful as an additional KPI but should not replace platform-level analysis.
