How to Earn Valuable Brand Mentions That Improve Visibility in AI and Google?
To build visibility in AI tools, a presence on your own site is not enough. Language models need independent confirmation of a brand's authority across the web. The strongest signal deciding recommendations and citations in AI Overviews or ChatGPT today is quality brand mentions set in the right context. In this article we explain how to earn credible publications naturally, the kind that will genuinely increase your brand's visibility in AI Search.

Key Takeaways

    • Brand mentions are a key factor in presence in AI Overviews. An Ahrefs study of more than 75,000 brands showed that brand mentions have the strongest correlation with AIO visibility of all the factors analyzed.
    • Comparison material generates the most citations. According to a Semrush study, ranking and comparison content generates 2.4 times more mentions in AI tools than purely informational publications. That is worth keeping in mind when you go after mentions.
    • A brand present only on its own site bases its message on its own claims, and AI systems look for confirmation across many independent sources (reviews, opinions, roundups) before treating a company as credible and recommending it in an answer.
    • A good brand mention should come from a source that matters in the given industry (topical fit), place the brand in an unambiguous context, contain verifiable facts and data, come about editorially and naturally, be available in text form, and use a consistent brand name.
    • The best way to earn mentions naturally is publishing unique market research saturated with hard data, and creating semantic connections (entities) between the company’s experts and the industry, which directly builds their authority in the eyes of AI models.

    What Is a Brand Mention?

A brand mention is a reference published online to a company’s name, its product, service, expert, reports or other material connected with the brand. It may contain a link leading to the brand’s site, or it may appear without one, as a purely verbal reference.

Mentions can appear in places such as:

    • articles on industry portals,
    • reports and studies,
    • rankings and comparisons,
    • reviews and opinions,
    • posts published on social media,
    • podcasts, transcripts and episode descriptions,
    • forum discussions,
    • industry directories.

Earning mentions brings a range of benefits.

From a PR point of view, positive mentions help build the brand’s image. For SEO, the links earned alongside mentions support visibility for target subpages. And for AISO, meaning optimization for AI tools, mentions help build authority, which increases the chance of being cited and recommended in the answers of LLM models.

Brand Mentions and Brand Authority in LLMs

The influence of brand mentions on a brand’s visibility in AI generated answers has been confirmed by numerous industry studies. Ahrefs ran an analysis of more than 75,000 brands, checking the correlations between individual factors and presence in Google’s AI Overviews results. In that study, brand mentions had the strongest correlation with AIO visibility: brands in the top quartile by number of brand mentions received as much as 10 times more mentions in AIO than companies in the next quartile.

The research Ahrefs carried out on its own database shows how important brand building and brand recognition are for visibility in AI tools. Brand activities take the top three positions among the factors that most affect appearing in AI Overviews: brand mentions first, then links earned on branded anchors, and search volumes connected with the brand, which speak to its popularity.

Why is the correlation between building mentions and visibility in AI so clear?

LLMs such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can draw on material available online in real time, and use those sources as they prepare an answer. This means brands should build their own expert resources in the form of articles, case studies and research, while also taking care of their presence in independent publications across the web.

Users often ask LLMs about comparisons of models, the choice of the best tool, or which company to hire for a given service. Before an AI system prepares an answer, it looks for confirmation across as many credible sources as possible: it checks reviews, opinions on various portals, roundups and rankings.

A brand present only on its own website bases everything it says about the company on its own claims, which AI does not necessarily have to treat as credible. Presence across many independent sources gives models a broader set of information they can use to assess and describe the brand.

What Does a Good Brand Mention Look Like?

Below we have gathered the set of factors that our analyses across numerous projects have shown to be the most important when it comes to earning valuable brand mentions.

    1. It Comes From a Source That Matters in the Industry

The publication you earn should be connected, by topic or by community, with the category in which the brand wants to build visibility. For a company offering management software for HR departments, for example, a mention on a portal devoted to HR technology, employer branding or human resource management will be valuable.

And what about the domain’s popularity? It can of course help, and the more trusted the domain and the longer its history the better, but in line with good practice it is topical fit that matters more for building the right semantic associations.

    2. It Places the Brand in an Unambiguous Context

Setting the brand in a specific context helps build its image. A weak mention is just a simple reference to the company, for example “Company X helped prepare the report.” Wording like that gives no insight into the brand at all.

A construction like this would sound better: “Company X, which specializes in delivering human resource management solutions, analyzed data from more than 200 companies.” This version carries context linking the brand with the service it provides, the business’s target group and the scope of its experience.

    3. It Contains Information That Can Be Verified

The most effective mentions contain facts that can be verified, or data that models can use when generating answers. A mention may contain data from a study, project results, a quote drawing on the experience of the brand’s expert, information about a certification, a product’s price or feature, or a specific use case.

Content like this does not only help place the brand semantically, it also supplies ready made data to be cited later in an LLM.

    4. It Comes About Editorially and Naturally

In its current guidelines, Google warns against acquiring inauthentic mentions. Artificial publications containing untrue or extremely thin information about a company, mass directory entries, or automated comments generated on forums purely to place a brand name, may be treated as spam. Google regularly updates its spam detection systems, and breaking the rules can lead to a site’s rankings dropping or to its complete removal from search results (more on this: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/essentials/spam-policies).

A good mention should follow from a real reason why the author of the publication, the customer or the expert refers to the brand.

    5. It Is Available in Text Form

Even if a brand appears in a podcast or a webinar as video material, it is worth making sure it also appears in the description or the transcript in text form. This makes it easier for AI bots to recognize the topic of the material, the expert appearing in it and the brand.

    6. It Uses a Consistent Brand Name

A consistent message and consistent brand data are an important credibility signal for optimization in AI tools. It is worth paying particular attention to the correct spelling of:

    • the brand name,
    • the product name,
    • the company address and other details (the tax ID, for example),
    • the website address,
    • the first and last names of experts.

If an LLM wants to recommend a company to a user in its answer and finds several different addresses online, the uncertainty in the data will lead it to drop that brand from the recommendation.

How to Earn Mentions That Can Increase Brand Visibility?

    1. Create Data and Material Worth Citing

The best way to earn mentions naturally is sharing your own knowledge, which other people will use to create their own material and AI models will use to generate answers.

As part of this, a company can publish:

    • proprietary market research saturated with hard data,
    • reports based on internal data,
    • recurring summaries of changes in the industry,
    • indexes or rankings.

The more unique the analysis, the greater the value it adds for the brand. A report titled “Marketing trends in 2026,” for example, will compete with at least a hundred similar pieces published by other companies. A report titled “How customer acquisition costs changed across 150 Polish online stores between 2024 and 2026,” on the other hand, delivers specific data and strong conclusions that industry portals and other companies can cite.

    2. Run e-PR Activities Built on Expert Knowledge

Creating valuable material to be cited is a good first step, and one worth following up with e-PR activities that will help promote a proprietary report and make it available to a wider audience. A well thought out e-PR strategy lets you earn mentions from editorial publications, news services and industry material.

If things are changing in the industry, if new solutions or regulations are appearing, that is a good opportunity to earn a brand mention with an expert comment from a specialist working at the company. At moments like these, industry media often look for expert statements for their articles, so an e-PR strategy should be built in part on reacting quickly to situations like this. That way the mention comes about naturally, is surrounded semantically by current knowledge, and helps create a professional brand image.

    3. Build Recognition for the Experts Connected With Your Brand

And speaking of experts, building the authority of the company’s employees is also a valuable investment in earning mentions later on.

Below is a short checklist of the things worth taking care of:

    • Create dedicated profiles for your employees on your site, describing their education, experience and areas of specialization.
    • Prepare short biographies with an author description and a photo, to use as bylines on the material you publish on the site.
    • Get your employees involved in speaking at conferences and appearing in podcasts, webinars and interviews.
The more semantic connections (entities) an expert has with the industry, the more strongly this will affect their authority in the eyes of AI models. A brand that can point to a group of experts like this automatically gains credibility and a chance to earn mentions naturally in valuable sources.

    4. Appear in Comparisons and Rankings

Comparison queries are the kind of prompts that give a brand the greatest chance of being cited by AI. Users often ask LLMs about:

    • the best tools for X,
    • proven companies offering Y,
    • alternatives to product Z, and so on.

It is worth analyzing which comparisons and lists are already being cited by AI tools for industry prompts. The next step is checking what conditions have to be met for the brand to be included in a comparison like that. Another approach is publishing your own material comparing products or services, which can also increase the chance of earning a mention.

The importance of a brand’s presence in publications of this kind is confirmed by data from an analysis carried out by Semrush. According to the study, comparison content generates 2.4 times more mentions in AI tools than purely informational material. The analysis was carried out across four different AI based tools and search engines, on data for close to 4,000 websites. It shows how presence in ranking and comparison publications increases the chance of brand visibility in generative answers.

    5. Develop Your Presence on Review Sites

Reviews left on sites dedicated to them can also be treated as user generated brand mentions. Depending on the industry, the following portals may matter:

    • Google Business Profile (essential for businesses operating locally),
    • G2,
    • Capterra,
    • Trustpilot,
    • Clutch,
    • TripAdvisor,
    • Booking,
    • marketplaces,
    • specialist industry portals.

A company should ask customers for reviews at natural moments in the process, for example after a project ends, after a problem is solved, after a result is achieved, or, in the case of e-commerce, after a purchase.

It is worth encouraging customers to describe a specific experience, for example what problem the company helped them solve, why they chose that solution, what result they got, and what type of user they would recommend the product or service to.

    6. Take Part in Communities Where Users Actually Make Decisions

Mentions can also be earned on forums that gather a community around an industry, and on portals such as Reddit. These places online can carry questions the brand is in a natural position to answer.

A brand’s presence in channels like these, and the mentions it earns there, may involve:

    • answering questions,
    • explaining problems,
    • responding to criticism,
    • correcting inaccurate information.
Avoid spam tactics based on creating accounts in bulk and publishing forced comments: this creates reputational risk and may breach the platforms’ rules.

    7. Update Existing Mentions

Sometimes an audit of publications you already have can bring real benefits. Checking earlier articles may reveal that a piece contains only a mention with no link (and perhaps the publisher will agree to add one), that there are errors in how the brand name is written that need correcting, or that some information is out of date.

Contact with the author should bring value for the other side too, so it is worth preparing new data, a report or information that will help update the publication.

    How to Measure the Results?

A brand mention strategy has to be monitored with KPIs from several areas:

KPIHow to measure it?What insight does it give?
Number of new mentionsMedia monitoring tools (Brand24, SentiOne, Mention, Google Alerts, for example), counting unique text mentions both with and without a link.Speaks to the momentum of the brand’s presence in the media and its current industry profile.
Number of new domains mentioning the brandSEO tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, Senuto).Indicates diversification of sources, authority building and reach expanding beyond the same set of portals.
Share of topically relevant sourcesThe ratio of mentions in industry and specialist media to the total number of mentions. Can be checked with SEO tools.Verifies that you are reaching the right target group.
Number of links earnedGoogle Search Console (the Links report), Ahrefs and Semrush (split into follow, nofollow and UGC).Measures the effectiveness of the publications earned and lets you verify their quality.
Branded searchGoogle Search Console (impressions and clicks on branded queries), Google Trends, Ahrefs (brand search volume).Speaks to the real growth in market awareness driven by the publications and mentions.
Referral trafficGoogle Analytics 4, the Traffic acquisition report (sessions from sources tagged with UTM links).Shows direct entries to the site from publications and the quality of referring traffic.
Traffic from ChatGPT and other AI toolsGoogle Analytics 4, filtering by utm_source=chatgpt and by referring domains (perplexity.ai, claude.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, for example).Measures the volume of users landing on the site directly from the answers and recommendations of LLMs.
How often the brand appears in monitored promptsQuerying a fixed set of industry and purchase prompts in LLMs on a recurring basis. Also possible with tools such as Ahrefs or Cerber.AI (Delante’s proprietary tool).Verifies whether the brand sits in the set of recommendations LLMs give for the most important prompts.
Share of Voice in AI answersThe percentage share of the brand’s recommendations and mentions in LLMs compared with competitors. Can be measured with SEO tools.Indicates informational dominance and competitive advantage in the generative layer.
Sentiment of mentionsMonitoring tools with a sentiment analysis module (positive, neutral, negative) plus manual verification of key discussions.Tells you the tone of the discourse around the brand and how it is received on the market, and enables early detection of reputational crises.
Conversions assisted by branded and referral trafficGoogle Analytics 4, attribution and multichannel path reports (referral and brand search touchpoints before the final goal).Speaks to the real contribution mentions and authority make to closing transactions and generating leads (business impact and ROI).

    Which Mistakes to Avoid?

    • Do not buy large numbers of artificial publications: it is a needless waste of budget. Google states outright that its algorithms are able to detect unnatural mass publication and that it penalizes brands using such practices.
    • Do not choose sites for publication on domain authority alone: parameters such as DR or DA are very easy to manipulate and inflate artificially. The most important factors should be topical relevance and a site’s real authority and history.
    • Do not focus solely on mentions without links: earning valuable links to your pages is still a strong foundation for standard SEO. The best proportion is a natural mix of both types of mention.
    • Do not expect an immediate effect: there is no guaranteed number of mentions that automatically secures visibility in AI tools. The effect will depend on many factors, but one thing is certain, it takes time. Do not abandon the strategy before you have analyzed the results over a reasonable period.

A Checklist for a Valuable Brand Mention

Below we have prepared the list of questions we use when verifying publications earned as part of an AI Authority Link Building strategy:

    1. Is the source connected with the brand’s industry or audience?
    2. Is the publication publicly available?
    3. Can it be indexed?
    4. Is the brand name spelled correctly?
    5. Does the mention explain what the brand does?
    6. Does it connect the brand with the right topic?
    7. Does it contain a fact, an experience, an opinion or data?
    8. Did it come about in a natural editorial context?
    9. Does it contain a link to the most relevant page?
    10. Will the information still be current in a few months?
    11. Does the publication answer a real user question?
    12. Does it strengthen the association the brand cares about?

The more yes answers, the greater the mention’s potential for the brand’s reputation and for its visibility in AI systems.

    FAQ

Why Are Mentions So Important for Visibility in LLMs?

When LLMs such as ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity answer user questions, they look for confirmation of information across many independent, credible sources. A brand present only on its own site bases its message purely on its own claims, which AI may not treat as fully credible. Presence in external publications gives models broader data with which to assess, describe and recommend the company.

What Qualities Does a Good Brand Mention Need to Have?

A valuable mention should come from a source that matters and fits the industry topically, should place the brand in an unambiguous business context, and should contain facts or data that algorithms can verify. It also has to come about naturally and editorially, be available in text form (which makes it easier for AI bots to read), and contain a fully correct and consistent rendering of the brand name, products and experts.
