What is Negative SEO? – Definition

Negative SEO is the process opposite to SEO. It is aimed at decreasing the visibility of the website in the search results and lowering its ranking in SERP. It is mostly used by competitors who would like to achieve high positions for the same keywords.

Types of Negative SEO Attacks

Negative practices, which are part of Black Hat SEO, include among others:

  • duplicate content, i.e. creating the same content and increasing the level of duplication,
  • building spammy backlinks on low-quality domains with inappropriate content (e.g. pornographic sites),
  • removing backlinks from good quality websites,
  • adding negative reviews about the website on Google.
