There is one question that is boggling the minds of SEO Specialists and online website owners:

Are we on the verge of breaking up with traditional keyword research?

My answer to that one is…

source: Tenor

👍 YES because what used to require doing a lot of research and digging into each Client’s niche, now takes literally a few seconds. I’m talking about keyword research, of course. With a couple of quick interactions, ChatGPT churns out numerous keyword suggestions faster than you can say “search engine optimization.”

🚩 NO because the findings aren’t backed-up with real-life data. You simply can’t rely on ChatGPT alone. As you know, SEO evolves constantly, and so does customer behavior. That’s why we absolutely need to have access to the latest information to make the right business and SEO-related decisions.

In simpler terms, having access to accurate keyword metrics like difficulty score, search volume, and trends remains crucial. That’s the determiner of whether it’s worth building your content strategy around those keywords or not.

So, keep reading to learn:

  • when using ChatGPT for keyword research makes sense
  • the limitations of ChatGPT in keyword research
  • how to ask ChatGPT keyword research queries
  • how to verify ChatGPT keyword research results
  • instructions on how to integrate ChatGPT with APRIM Chrome Extension

With that being said, let’s think…

When Using ChatGPT for Keyword Research Makes Sense

To me, there are two main scenarios when you may try using ChatGPT for keyword research.

FIRST SCENARIO

When you have a general idea of what you want to write about, like MTB bikes, but you’re not sure where to begin. In such a situation, ChatGPT may provide you with some blog topic ideas revolving around off-road cycling, making your content fully relatable to your target audience.

SECOND SCENARIO

When you have already used up all the keywords you intended to incorporate into your web content, ChatGPT can help you spark new ideas for blog post topics. This way, you can write more articles that resonate with your target audience, without repeating yourself or risking duplicate content.

Summing up, ChatGPT may enhance your SEO efforts, particularly in content creation. The thing is to know how to use it correctly and wisely.

⚠️ Therefore, before showing you how to create your own prompts and give you ready-made ones, I think we should briefly touch on one of the biggest downsides of ChatGPT.

Limitations of ChatGPT in Keyword Research

ChatGPT is undisputedly a marvelous tool, yet it has its obvious flaws which are often exposed while conducting keyword research.

Keep in mind that this tool doesn’t operate on real-time data. ChatGPT’s knowledge is based on a static database with a knowledge cutoff dated November 2021.

Also, I doubt you would call ChatGPT an SEO tool, would you? It clearly lacks some key features, such as Search Volume or Keyword Difficulty, that come with top SEO apps and software. That’s why my advice to you is that you should always verify ChatGPT’s findings using SEMrush, Ahrefs, or Google Search Console (the latter offers you the most accurate analytical data).

That being said, go ahead and use ChatGPT as an aid or a kind of helping hand while doing keyword research. Ask it to help you craft compelling article titles containing the very keywords you find. Make it prepare a blog post brief for you. However, you should always refer to an SEO tool of your choice to double-check the keywords the artificial intelligence chatbot provides you with.

It would be a pity to write a lengthy 10-page long article, only to optimize it for a keyword that fails to generate organic traffic to your website, wouldn’t it?

Naturally, I’ll walk you through the entire process in a moment. But before that, let’s touch on yet another issue that may help you save time and money.

When Does an SEO Specialist Use ChatGPT for Keyword Research?

Actually, why should you even reach for ChatGPT to find new keywords when you already have the best keyword research tools within your reach? Isn’t it even more time-consuming to first generate the list of phrases in ChatGPT to later check each one separately in an SEO tool?

Well, I must tell you that there are situations when ChatGPT turns out to be a true godsend, at least for me.

When I work with brands falling into the “niche industry” category, it’s sometimes really hard to come up with keywords for optimizing their website. To get some analytical data that allows me to build an effective SEO strategy, I need to establish a foothold first. And this is the exact moment ChatGPT comes in incredibly handy.

The list of key phrases generated by the artificial intelligence chatbot may help you – as it helps me – come across some really great keyword ideas. Naturally, each suggestion needs to be verified, yet it’s highly probable that ChatGPT will tell you where to start and what phrases are worth revolving around.

Let me put it this way: Based on my observations, using ChatGPT for keyword research turns out to be amazing when you need to work on a topic that you have little-to-zero experience or knowledge on.

So, let’s see how to employ ChatGPT for your SEO content strategy to find the hidden gems, shall we?

My Tried-and-Tested Tactics & Prompts for Doing Keyword Research with ChatGPT

As I’ve just sketched out, you can use ChatGPT at various stages of your keyword research:

  • right at the very beginning, when you have no clue where to begin
  • when you want to explore some new search terms and phrases on a topic you’ve already written a number of articles about
  • at the end of your content creation process when you’ve used up all the keywords from your “blog post ideas” list or included in your publishing schedule

Now, let me walk you through the process of finding new keywords using ChatGPT – no matter the stage you’re at. Rest assured that all the prompts I’m about to provide you with have been thoroughly tested by me, so I believe they should work for you as well. Of course, feel free to customize them to better suit your needs – the overall process and underlying logic will apply to every industry and business.

📣 For the purpose of this guide – but mostly to make the entire process easily comprehensible – I’m going to walk you through using some simple prompts & tricks first.

Basics: ChatGPT Keyword Research Prompts

Let’s begin with some lightweight stuff so that comprehending more complex concepts won’t be as mind-bending as it usually is.

First, let’s learn how to get the list of basic keywords related to your business/industry. We can do this in two ways: one that is pretty straightforward, and the other is a little more intricate.

THE EASY WAY #1

You may simply ask the artificial intelligence chatbot to provide you with a list of keywords connected with your general business profile. In our case, which is SEO, it looks like this:

keyword research for SEO topic by chatgpt

As you can see, the keywords provided by ChatGPT are generic.

Conclusion? A general prompt gives you general information. This means you shouldn’t expect to discover some never-heard-before and unique phrases that would attract millions of new users to your website when using general prompts.

It doesn’t mean though that receiving such a list of keywords is like, as they say, a broken pencil – pointless. Actually, this is the perfect moment to have a go at the so-called drill-down technique:

You pick one key phrase and keep asking ChatGPT to provide you with more suggestions on it.

I’ll show you how to do it later because that’s a bit more high-level thing. Let’s nail composing the basic prompts and queries first.

THE EASY WAY #2

Provide a brief description of your business profile and target audience + ask ChatGPT to give you a list of keywords that match those two criteria.

PROMPT

We’re [YOUR BUSINESS PROFILE] offering [NAME YOUR SERVICES] for [DEFINE YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE]. Generate 10 keywords we may use in our content to drive organic traffic.

Here’s how I would do it for Delante:

keyword research by chatgpt

Naturally, you can change and modify the prompt a number of times, asking ChatGPT for synonyms or paraphrases. Yet, the results are going to be pretty basic that you – as a business owner working in a given industry – probably could come up with yourself sooner or later.

⚠️Please notice that you don’t know the “value” of the given search terms because the chatbot doesn’t provide you with key metrics such as Keyword Difficulty or Search Volume.

That’s why, we need to take one step further and make things a little bit more interesting.

Generating Topic-Related Keywords in ChatGPT

Another way you can use ChatGPT in SEO is to generate topic-related keywords. Sometimes you know what your blog post or article is going to be about but you don’t know what keywords it should be optimized for. And this is when our little artificial intelligence chatbot comes in handy.

EASY METHOD #1

For the purpose of this article, let’s assume we don’t know much about search engine optimization. Neither do we have a clue which keywords are worth incorporating into our web content. What we know though is that we want to write about keyword research, and this is our starting point.

PROMPT

List without description the top 5 most popular keywords for the topic of [YOUR TOPIC].

keywords chosen by chatgpt

EASY METHOD #2

You may also try to ask the bot to prepare a list of long tail keywords on – in this case – keyword research:

PROMPT

List the top 5 most popular long tail keywords for the topic [YOUR TOPIC].

list of keywords by chatgpt

EASY METHOD #3

Going further, you may want to ask chatGPT to provide you with related topics which will aid you in creating more web content revolving around the main topic. Alternatively, you may consider these suggestions as separate sections of your article. This is useful especially when you are about to write long-form content.

PROMPT

What are the most popular sub-topics related to [YOUR TOPIC]?

list of sub-topics by chatgpt

Once you take your ChatGPT-generated list of keywords and check each item’s position in an SEO tool, you can go ahead and put them to good use. What use?

Once again, you may either:

✔️ go deeper and expand on a topic you intended to write about, or

✔️ prepare completely new pieces of web content to build a denser net of interlinked pages, also known as topic clusters

Again, the example we have just gone through was supposed to help you wrap your head around the process of using ChatGPT for keyword research. Now, you’re prepared to do some heavy lifting. It’s time to analyze a topic that has a very specific appeal. Let’s take guitar potentiometer values, for example.

PROMPT

What are the most popular sub-topics related to [guitar potentiometer values]?

list of keywords by chatgpt

Easy? It clearly seems so, especially when you use the right prompt.

This time the AI chatbot gave us the keywords followed by their brief descriptions. Naturally, you can ask just for the keywords, or formulate some other request. For example, ChatGPT can create tables, arranging the data neatly into rows and columns for you. Did you know that? I’ll talk about this feature in a moment.

⚠️ Now let me tell you this: There is no single ultimate way to formulate prompts. By saying this I mean, sometimes you need just a list of keywords, other times it makes more sense to you to get a bit more information on the key phrases. Whichever road you choose, always check the search terms in an SEO tool of your preference – to me, it’s either Ahrefs or SEMrush.

🚨 Sadly, it’s still (I mean when I’m writing this guide, which is June 2023) typical of ChatGPT to hallucinate. Be aware that the reply may be formulated from some inaccurate or even made-up data. That’s why it’s important to do some fact-and-data checking, especially if you aren’t an expert on a given topic.

Emulating Google Autofill in ChatGPT

The third way to use ChatGPT for keyword research is by emulating Google’s built-in autofill feature.

If you’re no stranger to keyword research, then you’ve probably used autofill a couple of times to find new keyword ideas. For those who aren’t familiar with this method:

To use Google Autofill for keyword research, start by entering a broad keyword or topic related to your industry or content focus and follow it with a letter. As you type, Google Autofill will present you with a list of suggested search queries related to the initial keyword. These suggestions are generated by analyzing the search patterns and behaviors of millions of users.

Let’s take “keyword research,” for example, and follow the phrase with the first letter of the alphabet:

google autofill for keyword research

These suggestions give you valuable insights into what people are currently searching for, which can help you identify new keyword ideas. It can also help you understand popular topics or keyword trends.

When you want to reconstruct Google Autofill in ChatGPT, you simply need to use a chosen keyword phrase and ask the AI chatbot to follow the phrase with a word(s) that start(s) with a given letter.

PROMPT

List the most popular keywords that include the keyword [THE KEYWORD], and the next letter of the word starts with [THE LETTER]

list of keywords provided by chatgpt

There are two important issues I need to address at this stage:

1️⃣ Even though the AI chatbot provided us with the search volume, I advise you against considering this metric as 100% accurate. Always refer to an SEO tool to verify this information.

2️⃣ Besides, have you noticed that despite receiving the same instructions, ChatGPT listed completely different search terms than Google? Do you know why is that? I bet you do – ChatGPT doesn’t have access to the present-day data, unlike Google which generates the responses in real-time.

Still, I don’t think using this method won’t get you anywhere. Quite the contrary, emulating Google Autofill in ChatGPT may help you discover some profitable keywords for your business. Remember though to always check their metrics using an SEO tool before incorporating them into your content strategy.

Adding Your Buyer Personas for ChatGPT Keyword Research

This one is pretty awesome.

You give ChatGPT persona descriptions you plan to write a piece of content for, and ask the chatbot to give you the search terms each person from your target audience is likely to use. In case your persona isn’t defined – don’t worry because you can still use this method.

Here’s how I would do it.

First and foremost, I’d divide this ChatGPT keyword research method into 3 stages.

PROMPT #1

For the topic of [“YOUR KEYWORD”], list 5 keywords each for the different types of a buyer persona.

keyword research fo buyer personas by chatgpt

See what we did here? ChatGPT gave us long-tail keywords which make a wonderful starting point for our further research. What’s more, you should find this kind of information truly valuable as it helps adapt the right tone of voice and style, so it resonates better with a particular group of buyers.

Remember when I suggested dividing this ChatGPT Keyword Research method into three steps? So during the second stage, you may try asking the artificial intelligence chatbot to give you typical queries each group of buyers may type into search engines when looking for information on a given topic (in my case, it’s still “keyword research”).

PROMPT #2

For each of the personas, list the most important questions they might have related to the mentioned keyword.

questions for buyers personas chatgpt

Isn’t it impressive? This is certainly plenty of information that can be utilized for creating new articles as well as elements that should probably find their place on your website. Yet, before you fiddle around with your web content, check the new ideas in a dedicated SEO tool (I’ll remind you about this essential step a few more times throughout this article). Alternatively, you may ask the copywriter you work with to do the research and verify those exemplary queries before adding them to the texts.

Okay, let’s take one more step. Having the above information, try asking Chat GPT to table the data.

PROMPT #3

Make a table and present each question with the corresponding persona, and keyword and add long-tail keywords.

table containing personas questions and keywords

Undoubtedly, leveraging buyer personas for ChatGPT keyword research can provide you not only with valuable insights but also the inspiration for crafting highly targeted website content. Just like a real assistant, the AI chatbot categorizes the information for you, matching each persona with corresponding queries and long-tail keywords.

You know what? Let’s take one step further and match the personas with search intent.

Matching Buyer Personas with Search Intents

So, without further ado…

PROMPT

For the topic of [“YOUR KEYWORD”] list 5 keywords for different types of search intent that a business owner might be searching for.

list of keywords by search intent

list of keywords by search intent 2

You’d probably agree that such a list of keyword ideas looks promising.

However, let’s take a closer look at it. Can you spot any phrases that sound a bit off?

To me, “buy keyword research services” appears to be a bit of a weird search term. Let’s jump into Ahrefs to run a quick check.

checking keywords provided by chatgpt in ahrefs

See? This is what I mean when I say:

Always check ChatGPT’s suggestions in a trusted SEO tool!

Not that I’m bragging, but an experienced SEO Specialist like myself has an eye for spotting such utterly bizarre and utterly useless phrases, even before checking them in SEO tools.

These are the basics of doing ChatGPT keyword research. It doesn’t mean though that’s all you can do with this artificial intelligence chatbot. Indeed, there’s more, that’s why…

Here are more ideas on how to use ChatGPT for keyword research.

Expert-Level ChatGPT Keyword Research Prompts

You’ve just learned how to formulate basic and more advanced ChatGPT keyword research prompts. Now it’s time for you to discover a slightly different approach.

Rather than solely fixating on keywords, you can engage your readers by incorporating comparisons and thought-provoking questions, which you can later address within your text.

Just take a look at this expert-level prompt:

PROMPT

Write 10 keywords for the topic of [YOUR TOPIC] that contain any of all of the following: “who,” “what,” “where,” “how,” “why,” and “when.”

using chatgpt to generate long tail keywords list

In this simple way, you have a list of questions that you can use to create a FAQ section or standalone paragraphs.

In a similar fashion, you can explore the creative use of comparisons as I did below:

PROMPT

Write 10 keywords for the topic of [YOUR TOPIC] that contain any or all of the following: “for,” “vs,” and “alternative.”

list of long tail keywords generated by chatgpt

Isn’t it a great way to discover new content ideas in a snap? I see it as a handy way to come up with fresh web content ideas without spending hours and eventually ending up getting overwhelmed.

Finding new blog post topic ideas may be a pretty daunting task, especially if you’ve been doing it for a few long months. It’s even more troublesome when working on a topic where you’re not an expert. That’s why I consider these ChatGPT keyword research prompt ideas extremely useful – so do you, I hope.

Multi-Step ChatGPT Keyword Research Prompts

Time for something more complex. It’s not difficult, but rather multi-step.

When you already have your favorite ways of creating prompts for keyword research in ChatGPT, you may try combining them into one prompt by following consecutive steps.

Why would you like to do it? In my view, this approach to generating ChatGPT multi-step prompts streamlines your content creation process because it provides you with:

  • clear suggestions for your publishing schedule
  • search terms
  • long-tail keywords
  • questions that you can answer in your texts
  • ideas for headings

This enables you to organize your writing effectively and create topic clusters centered around the main theme of your website.

This is how you use ChatGPT multi-step prompts for content creation.

Your Goal:

generate a list of keywords with corresponding search intent, related questions, and blog topic ideas

——

ChatGPT Keyword Research Prompt:

Perform the following steps in a consecutive order Step 1, Step 2, Step 3, Step 4.

Step 1 – Generate the 5 most popular keywords related to the topic of “keyword research” with their search intent.

Step 2 – For each keyword provide 2 long-tail keywords.

Step 3 – Generate the 5 most popular questions that include those keywords.

Step 4 – Generate 5 blog article titles based on the keywords from Step 1 and Step 2.

——

Here is what you get:

This method is remarkably helpful and I find it immensely practical – that’s why I’m sharing it with you.

Interestingly, ChatGPT itself draws my attention to the fact that the popularity of the presented phrases and topics changes – just look:

note from chatgpt that popular keywords might change

That’s why before you jump all in and start crafting targeted pieces of content, check the phrases and keywords in Ahrefs or SEMrush.

⚠️ I’d also advise you to look at the chatbot’s proposed ideas with a critical eye: Are they in line with your marketing strategy? Does it make sense to write a blog post on all the suggested topics? Ultimately, it’s you who calls the shots.

SIDE NOTE Of course, you may go further and ask ChatGPT for briefs on each of the suggested blog posts, but I think this can be a bit too much information for now. Doing so is quite risky. You may actually hurt your ranking and that’s why you need to be aware of all the drawbacks and pitfalls this approach undoubtedly presents.

Let’s wrap up what we’ve learned so far: You know now how to create various kinds of prompts to generate lists of keywords. Now let’s think…

Should You Ask ChatGPT for Search Volume?

Well, yes and no.

Why ”no”? As the chatbot itself mentioned, it’s important to note that the data it provides may be inaccurate or outdated.

Why “yes”? However, requesting information on the search volume of suggested keywords can give you a rough idea of how well those phrases perform among your target audience. This can serve as a useful indicator for assessing their potential effectiveness.

Let’s see what asking ChatGPT for keyword metrics looks like:

PROMPT

Write a list of keywords for the topic of [YOUR TOPIC] with their search volume.

list of keywords with volumens by chatgpt

That being said, let me show you how to verify the information provided by ChatGPT. After all, if you want your content strategy to succeed, you need to make informed decisions based on reliable data, right?

How to Verify ChatGPT Keyword Research Results

I personally suggest dividing the process of data verification into two separate stages:

1️⃣ check given keyword metrics to find out whether it is worth using in your content

2️⃣ check whether ChatGPT didn’t give you false information, which is also known as a hallucination – I’m sure you’ve already come across this term while reading on ChatGPT

ChatGPT for SEO: Keyword Verification

In our case, the hard data we want to verify is the list of keywords.

What do you need?

A trusted SEO tool such as Ahrefs or SEMrush (I’m going to use Ahrefs)

Instructions for running the keyword metric check:

STEP 1 Prepare the list of keywords generated by ChatGPT. I suggest copying them into Google Sheets.

STEP 2 Open Ahrefs and select Keywords Explorer (top menu).

checking keywords from chatgpt in ahrefs

STEP 3 Enter the chosen keywords. Separate them with a comma. Ask the SEO tool to analyze the keywords by clicking the magnifying glass icon.

checking keywords from chatgpt in ahrefs

STEP 4 The tool provides you with information about the keywords.

checking keyword volumens from chatgpt in ahrefs

STEP 5 By looking at the search volume metrics, it appears that ChatGPT’s suggestions are pretty good, aren’t they? On the other hand, the Keyword Difficulty score is pretty high, meaning it may be incredibly hard to get your content ranked for those specific keywords – especially if your website is relatively new.

Generally, there are a few important metrics and variables to consider when doing keyword research. If you’re not familiar with this topic, I suggest reading up on Keyword Research Basics and Most Common Keyword Research Mistakes for some helpful insights.

STEP 6 What’s important, you can now proceed with your regular keyword research. Simply click on a chosen keyword to access its metrics, related topics, questions, websites that rank for this phrase, and so on, and so forth.

keyword overview in ahrefs

Conclusion

ChatGPT can undeniably assist you in generating keyword ideas. However, the ultimate decision of whether or not to incorporate these keywords into your content strategy lies with you. This decision should be backed by the reports and insights provided by advanced SEO tools.

ChatGPT for SEO: Fact-Checking

Every time you ask ChatGPT to write or describe something instead of just providing keywords, you need to verify the information it provides. Always.

If you ask the artificial intelligence chatbot to write something about a topic you know well – like me about SEO, for example – you can do these checks yourselves. However, as I mentioned before, using ChatGPT for keyword research, which I’m describing here, is particularly useful in niche industries and areas where you don’t have much knowledge.

In those cases, it’s especially important to verify the information generated by the chatbot. And there are two ways to do it: either through someone who has expertise in that area or by cross-referencing it with reliable sources.

Other Applications of ChatGPT for SEO

I doubt I’ll exaggerate by saying that there are hundreds if not thousands of ways of using ChatGPT for SEO and content creation. By now you’ve learned that this artificial intelligence chatbot can help you with:

  • discovering blog post topic ideas based on keyword research
  • building topical clusters
  • designing FAQ sections
  • crafting headings and titles
  • writing product descriptions
  • preparing meta descriptions
  • creating Google and Meta Ads

Let’s stop at the fourth bullet point, which is crafting headings and titles. Since this article is already quite lengthy, let me just touch on this matter very briefly.

Once you have a list of verified keywords, you can ask ChatGPT to prepare a few blog post titles for you. Obviously, the more details you provide the chatbot with, the better-tailored the titles are going to be.

PROMPT

I’m creating an article on a company blog about [YOUR TOPIC]. I want to teach the readers everything about [YOUR TOPIC] and I want to rank it high on Google for the keyword [YOUR KEYWORD] and long tail keywords [YOUR LONG-TAIL KEYWORD]. Suggest 5 long-tail keyword ideas for [YOUR TOPIC] article that will be helpful topics for the readers.

example of chatgpt prompt for keyword research

Easy, right?

You may use the suggested titles as headings or literally any other elements that break up your long piece of text. Of course, the critical eye approach still applies 😉

Amplify ChatGPT with Supplementary APRIM Plugin

Did you know that you can upgrade your ChatGPT by integrating it with the AIPRM plugin?

You may want to add this Chrome extension to the browser as it offers you one, yet incredibly useful and productivity-improving feature. In plain language, the AIPRM plugin boosts the functionality of ChatGPT by adding a list of prompt templates created by users.

Upgrading ChatGPT with APRIM Chrome Extension

STEP 0 Download the plugin from the Chrome Web Store – APRIM for ChatGPT

Let me now demonstrate APRIM’s mettle, so you know how to use it.

STEP 1 Add the plugin to your browser. Once you do that, the homepage of your ChatGPT changes. Simply put, now your AI chatbot gives you the possibility to make use of ready-made prompt templates and customize them at your will.

upgrading chatgpt with aprim plugin

As highlighted a moment ago, the prompts are created by users, meaning the number of these templates is constantly growing. Naturally, there is a search bar to facilitate finding the needed prompt quicker.

STEP 2 To find the right prompt for you, use 3 dropdown menus that you can find at the top. They allow you to pick and choose among:

  • Topics: copywriting, DevOps, generative AI, marketing, productivity, SEO + more
  • Activities: backend development, database administration, keywords, link building, marketing, research + more
  • Ranking: top views, top votes, latest updates

chatgpt aprim prompts

STEP 3 Since we’re learning the ins and outs of using ChatGPT for keyword research, we’re going to find a prompt that can help us with this process. So, let’s look for Keyword Generator.

Ready-Made ChatGPT Keyword Research Prompts: Keyword Generator

STEP 1 Find the prompt by entering its name into the search bar on the right.

how to find promopts chatgpt aprim plugin

STEP 2 When you find the prompt, just indicate the topic you want to get the keywords for and the list – like the one below – will appear on the screen within seconds.

list of keywords generated by chatgpt with aprim plugin

Am I happy with the result? Well, as for a general prompt, the job is done pretty well – the keywords are as generic as the prompt. To me, they resemble the result we achieved earlier when using our own self-written prompt.

Since we would like to squeeze out a little bit more, let’s have a go at more advanced prompts. I’m talking about custom-made prompts that connect them to additional information on the keywords, such as search intent.

Ready-Made ChatGPT Keyword Research Prompts: SEMRush | Keyword Research Tool

Just to be clear – we’re going to go through a similar process we’ve already done, with one difference. We’re not creating the prompts, but rather using ready-made solutions.

STEP 1 Let’s give SEMrush | Keyword Research Tool a shot.

⚠️Just a quick heads up – the prompt I’m presenting to you right now isn’t developed by SEMrush. This prompt is meant to mimic the functionality of the SEO tool, giving you a glimpse into keyword metrics like Keyword Difficulty, Competitive Density, and Search Volume. The information isn’t sourced from SEMrush or any other SEO tool.

Click on the prompt and put your search term at the very bottom. Click the Send message icon.

Sweet and simple, right?

OVER TO YOU #1

Can you trust these keyword metrics?

I’m sure your answer is negative. I’m also positive you know you need to verify the findings in the actual SEMrush tool, or Ahrefs.

OVER TO YOU #2

So what’s the point in using the ChatGPT prompt templates for keyword research if the results aren’t 100% reliable?

The information provided by the chatbot allows you to get a rough idea of how well the given keywords perform among your target audience – you also know that by far, right?

Simply put: This is your starting point.

I just want to realize that you can install the AIPRM extension in case you don’t feel like writing your own prompts.

Or… to experiment with prompts you wouldn’t come up with on your own. Just take a look at the Keyword Research from Article because I find it pretty practical and helpful.

Ready-Made ChatGPT Keyword Research Prompts: Keyword Research from Article

Keyword Research from Article allows you to extract keywords from a text. Naturally, this prompt isn’t foolproof, yet in most cases, it’s pretty good at its job. It may appear convenient when you don’t have access to paid SEO tools but wish to check what keywords your competitors use in their content.

STEP 1 Find this prompt by typing its name in the search bar.

chatgpt keyword research from article prompt

STEP 2 Enter any text you wish to research for keywords. I used one of our blog posts on How to Check Core Web Vitals. Here is what ChatGPT provided me with:

list of keywords from article generated with chatgpt prompt

Is the information 100% accurate? Not really.

Is it close to being accurate? Yes, it is. To be honest, it’s fine with me because, again, it gives me a rough sense of the direction I should take with my keyword research.

Going back to what I previously mentioned, ChatGPT works wonders when researching less popular, niche topics. Do you think we have a prompt for that, too? You bet we do!

STEP 1 Find this prompt by typing Generate Popular Keywords into the search bar.

chatgpt promopt generate popular keywords

I think we can use the guitar potentiometers again.

STEP 2 Enter your keyword in the search bar located at the bottom. I’m going to use “guitar potentiometers.”

list of keywords generated with popular keywords chatgpt prompt

As you can see, within a few seconds we receive a list of potential keywords together with their search intent and descriptions. This provides us with everything we need to begin conducting thorough research and determining their value for our website and content strategy.

You’d probably agree with me that this is a great way to kick things off, especially when we don’t know much about a given topic. Finding new keywords manually on Google would require a lot more work, especially if we have no access to top SEO tools to help us out.

There are actually hundreds of prompts available in APRIM. The ones I’ve just shown you are the ones I had a chance to test and use. From what I’ve seen, you can find SEO-related prompts (e.g. for metadata). I highly recommend you take a look at this wide prompt template database.

Using ChatGPT for Keyword Research: An Extra Step You May Fancy Taking

You get the list of keywords. All keywords are verified so you know which ones are worth being incorporated into your content strategy. What is the next step?

To me, you may ask ChatGPT to:

  • match those keywords with related topics
  • create questions featuring the keywords
  • create questions that you provide the answer for in your articles
  • prepare a blog post brief
  • build keyword clusters

Of course, each of those steps requires you to craft a good prompt. Naturally, feel free to use the prompts I’ve given you above. When it comes to preparing a blog post brief, this process is a bit more complex. I believe a similar guide will appear on Delante’s blog sooner or later, so stay tuned.

Now, let’s move on to one last thing, which is keyword clustering, in my opinion, shouldn’t be missed while talking about ChatGPT keyword research.

ChatGPT to Build Keyword Clusters

In short, keyword clustering (aka topic clustering or topic clusters) involves grouping related keywords into clusters. The idea is to organize and target content more effectively. By clustering keywords, you’re more likely to understand their connections, and thus create comprehensive content strategies that align with what your target audience searches for. The goal is always the same: You want to do this to improve website rankings, drive more organic traffic, and enhance your website’s overall SEO performance.

However, instead of doing the grouping yourself, you may ask ChatGPT to do this for you.

Just provide the AI chatbot with the list of verified keywords and ask it to do two things: create topic clusters and later match each one with search intents. Here’s how I would do it:

PROMPT

Create topic clusters based on the given keywords and add the search intent to each keyword.

Wait a short moment and you’ll get what you asked for, presented neatly on a table.

My Results of Using ChatGPT for Keyword Research

Even though using ChatGPT for keyword research, and for SEO in general, is a relatively new practice, I can already notice some really positive if not spectacular outcomes.

Let me prove it by showing you the exemplary results I managed to achieve for two of my Clients.

CASE #1

I used ChatGPT to find additional keywords that are related to the main keyword. My aim was to maintain the already high position in the SERP and later potentially improve it even further.

This is what I managed to achieve. The green line represents the moment I introduced the AI chatbot into the SEO process for this Client.

At first glimpse, it may be hard to notice any significant change in the position history. I, however, see things a bit differently. This graph proves that creating topic clusters and adding more content that revolves around the main topic of a website results in winning a steady position in SERP.

Actually, the website is continuously going up, so the position isn’t that “steady.”

CASE #2

This time ChatGPT helped me discover a keyword for a Client working in a niche industry. Interestingly, this was a completely new keyword that had never been used to optimize the Client’s website.

There are two more things you need to know about the keyword. One is that this phrase perfectly matches my Client’s business profile, and the other is that its search volume is surprisingly high for such a niche business.

After discovering this hidden gem, I incorporated it into the Client’s SEO strategy. More content was built on the very phrase and related keywords, which I also found due to ChatGPT (and verified in Ahrefs).

The result? Just look at the below graph:

Within just a few weeks my Client’s website made it to the TOP 10.

My Final Thoughts about Using ChatGPT for Keyword Research

While traditional keyword research methods are proven to be the most effective and reliable, we can’t deny that a new player has emerged in the field – ChatGPT.  No doubt, ChatGPT offers a truly unique approach to finding those golden keywords for your content creation and website optimization.

If there’s something I want you to remember after reading this guide, it’s these three key points:

📌 ChatGPT is a super cool tool that can be a practical aid for your keyword research, especially if you’re not an expert in a particular industry. It’s like having a trusty sidekick who helps you dig deep and find those golden nuggets of information you’d probably never find on your own.

📌 ChatGPT isn’t just limited to finding keywords. It can also add search intent, match them to different audience personas, and even assist you in crafting titles and structured content. It’s like having a personal SEO research assistant that saves you loads of time and effort.

📌 ChatGPT isn’t perfect. It has its quirks. That’s why it’s crucial to fact-check and validate every single piece of information it provides. Use the artificial intelligence chatbot if you wish to, but treat it only as a single element of a multi-step research process.

I’d also like to draw your attention that the prompts and applications of ChatGPT I’ve shared with you in this article are just a glimpse of what this AI chatbot is capable of – the possibilities are almost endless. That’s why follow my advice: take the prompts, mix, and match, and expand upon them.

The more experience you gain, the better outcomes you’ll be able to produce. Naturally, it’s not just about being familiar with how ChatGPT works. Having a solid foundation in SEO and content creation also play a huge role in bringing you closer to driving more customers to your website.

FAQ

Do SEO Specialists use ChatGPT for keyword research?

In general, SEO specialists make use of ChatGPT for keyword research. They consider it an assistant that helps them generate initial keyword ideas and suggestions. However, it’s crucial to remember that they don’t solely rely on ChatGPT’s responses. They always use advanced SEO tools to validate those keywords and check their metrics.

Should I use ChatGPT to do keyword research?

If you’re considering using ChatGPT for keyword research, it can be a useful starting point. However, it’s important to note that ChatGPT’s responses should be treated as suggestions rather than definitive answers.

To ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of your keyword research, it’s recommended to combine ChatGPT’s insights with advanced SEO tools that are specifically designed for keyword analysis.

How can I make my ChatGPT prompts for keyword research better?

There is a number of ways you can ask ChatGPT for doing the initial keyword research for you. You may simply ask it to:

  • provide you with a list of keywords connected with your general business profile
  • prepare a list of long-tail keywords on a given topic
  • emulate Google’s built-in autofill feature
  • give you the search terms that your buyer persona is likely to use
  • generate a list of keywords with corresponding search intent, related questions, and blog topic ideas
